Bronchiectasis and atelectasis; temporary and permanent changes.

چکیده
The introduction of iodized oil as a contrast medium in radiology by Forestier and Sicard made it possible for the first time to demonstrate dilated bronchi in the living body. Thus the diagnosis of bronchiectasis could be made with certainty during life and was no longer dependent on post-mortem verification. Cases of bronchiectasis became apparent which did not show the classical symptoms of long-continued ill-health, cough, and copious sputum, with clubbing of the fingers and signs of disease at the bases of the lungs. Wall and Hoyle (1933) were able to recognize cases of " dry bronchiectasis." The intimate association between atelectasis of the lung and bronchiectasis was recognized and commented on by many authors-Singer and Graham (1926), Anspach (1939), Warner and Graham (1933), and Warner (1934). Finally, cases of bronchiectasis were diagnosed within a short time of their onset, and subsequent restoration of the bronchi to normal calibre was shown (Findlay, 1935; Jennings, 1937; Lander and Davidson, 1938a; Fleischner, 1941; Ogilvie, 1941; and Blades and Dugan, 1944). This paper presents four cases of atelectasis with bronchiectasis in which subsequent re-expansion of the lung was attended in three cases by return of the bronchi to normal, and in the fourth by an alteration in the bronchographic appearances with a persistence of bronchiectasis. The experimental work which has a bearing on this problem is reviewed, and an attempt made to explain some of the anomalies and misunderstandings which have arisen.

The problem of bronchiectasis; a review.
Bronchiectasis, like pulmonary tuberculosis, is a killer of men; but bronchiectasis, unlike tuberculosis, kills on a fairly definite schedule. Tuberculosis, unless in a terminal state, tends to heal if given a chance; and we see many people who once had far advanced active pulmonary tuberculosis, who have regained a measure of health and economic independence; but we see very few bronchiectatic...

I nflation forecast is one of the tools in targeting inflation by the central bank. The most important problem of previous models to forecast the inflation is that they could not provide a correct prediction over time. However, the central bank policymakers shall seek to create economic stability by ignoring the short-term and temporary changes in price and regarding steady inflation...
متن کاملComputed tomography in adult patients with primary ciliary dyskinesia: Typical imaging findings
OBJECTIVES Among patients with non-cystic fibrosis bronchiectasis, 1-18% have an underlying diagnosis of primary ciliary dyskinesia (PCD) and it is suspected that there is under-recognition of this disease. Our intention was to evaluate the specific features of PCD seen on computed tomography (CT) in the cohort of bronchiectasis in order to facilitate the diagnosis. MATERIALS AND METHODS One ...
متن کاملAcute, transient middle lobe disease.
The special significance of atelectasis of the middle lobe was first pointed out in 1946 by Zdansky1 and Brock,2 independently. Zdansky described two cases of middle lobe atelectasis in adults caused by compression of the middle lobe bronchus by a calcified lymph node. He noted that in children enlargement of a lymph node often causes compression of a major bronchus leading to atelectasis of th...

Many countries in the world have experienced different sorts of disasters and consequently have suffered large losses of life and property. After disasters, there are three possible scenarios: in the first scenario, available (current) accommodation is not ruined, as a result no gap will be created; the second scenario declares that the current housing is ruined and the available gap will be fi...
